Engineering Challenges in the Field
The "Chip Packing" Nightmare
The internal gears of excavator travel reducer housings are typically deep blind holes. During machining, chips tend to accumulate at the bottom. If standard carbide tools are used, the cutting edge will suffer instantaneous catastrophic chipping upon contact with the accumulated chips.
The "Heat" Challenge
Hydraulic pump gears and heavy-duty transmission gears are typically made of high-strength alloy steels (such as 20CrMnTiH or 42CrMo) with high quenched and tempered hardness. During continuous cutting, the tool tip temperature can exceed 800°C. Standard coatings will rapidly oxidize and peel off, leading to a sharp decline in tool life.
Scenario-Based Solutions

Travel Motor Housing (Blind Hole Internal)
- Target Component:Planetary Ring Gear (Blind Hole)
- The Challenge:Blind hole structures make chip removal difficult, leading to “secondary cutting” and subsequent tool edge chipping.
- Nobeve Solution:P-Series PM-HSS Skiving Tool
- Technical Logic:
- Toughness is Key:In blind hole machining, toughness is more critical than hardness. The P-Series utilizes Powder Metallurgy High-Speed Steel (PM-HSS), whose unique microstructure acts like a “shock absorber.” Even when cutting into chips accumulated at the bottom, the tool will only experience slight wear rather than a catastrophic break.
- Chip Management:Compared to brittle carbide, the P-Series is the safest and most reliable choice for machining large-module blind-hole internal gears.
- Applicable Machine:
- Large Vertical Skiving Machine / Retrofitted Lathes(e.g., Pittler, domestic heavy-duty skiving).
- Req: Vertical setup aids gravity chip evacuation.
Hydraulic Pump Gears (High Heat/Hardness)
- Target Component:Pump Drive Gears (20CrMnTiH)
- The Challenge:High material hardness leads to extreme heat generation during continuous cutting.。
- Nobeve Solution:G-Series Hob (High Speed HTS)
- Technical Logic :
- Thermal Shield:G-Series is equipped with the Balzers Altensa coating, a nano-coating specifically designed for high-temperature hard cutting. It effectively insulates against cutting heat, preventing the substrate from annealing and softening, and offers a tool life 2–3 times longer than tools with standard TiAlN coatings.
- Heavy Duty:The substrate of the G-Series has undergone a strengthening treatment, enabling it to withstand the cutting resistance of high-hardness alloy steels.
- Applicable Machine:
- Heavy-Duty CNC Hobber(e.g., Chongqing Machine YS3120, Gleason P-Series).
- Req: Powerful spindle torque and oil cooling.

Slewing Pinions (Large Module)
- Target Component:Swing Pinion (Module 5)
- The Challenge:Large modules, massive metal removal, placing extreme demands on the tool’s wear resistance.
- Nobeve Solution:K-Series Large Module Hob
- Technical Logic:
- Efficiency:For these large-module external gears, using the solid carbide K-Series can significantly increase cutting speeds (a 200% increase compared to high-speed steel).
- Cost-Per-Part:While the unit price of the tool is higher, the extreme cutting efficiency and ultra-long tool life significantly reduce the Cost Per Piece (CPP) for each gear.
- Applicable Machine:
- Large Capacity Hobbing Machine.
- Req: High rigidity clamp and tailstock.
Tool Selection Table
| Application | Material Hardness | Recommended Tool | Key Benefit | Machine Required |
| Winch Drum (Internal) | Soft | P-Series Skiving | High Toughness | Vertical Skiving |

Customer voices
Trusted by Ag-Machinery Experts Globally
"We manufacture hydraulic winches for offshore cranes. The drums are large castings. We tried carbide skiving tools, but they kept breaking due to sand inclusions. Nobeve's P-Series PM-HSS cutters solved this. They are tough enough to handle the casting defects and still give us good cycle time."
"Our hoist gearboxes use Module 5 gears. Machining them used to take forever with HSS hobs. Switching to Nobeve's large K-Series Carbide hobs reduced our cutting time by 60%. The tool life is fantastic even with dry cutting."
"In our crane maintenance workshop, we encounter all kinds of old gears. The N-Series hobs are our go-to. They are affordable and reliable on our manual machines. Nobeve always has the standard profiles in stock."
Expert Technical FAQ
A
Winch drums often have a “Blind Hole” design with very little clearance at the bottom. Gear Shaping requires a large overrun (clearance) for the cutter stroke. Power Skiving (specifically with our P-Series) requires much less clearance (often < 5mm) and is 3-5 times faster than shaping, making it the ideal process for compact integrated drums.
A
It comes down to Material Reliability. Winch drums are often cast steel, which can contain hidden sand or hard spots. If a solid carbide tool hits a hard spot, it shatters. P-Series PM-HSS is much tougher; it can survive hitting a hard spot with only minor wear, saving you from scrapping an expensive tool and the workpiece.
A
Nobeve specializes in small-module gear cutting tools; the maximum module for the hobs we design is 5, and for our gear shaping cutters, it is 3.

Bronze is soft and sticky. Standard coatings can sometimes increase friction with bronze. We recommend K-Series hob and add a positive rake angle. This prevents chip adhesion (Built-Up Edge), ensuring a smooth finish on the worm wheel.
A
Yes, but the truth in gear cutting industry is that dry cutting is not good for the service life of gear hobs. However, ensure your machine has an efficient chip conveyor, as the volume of hot chips from dry cutting is significant
A
Stick to our N-Series (15%Co). N-Series is flexible and forgiving. It can handle the runout and vibration of older machines without chipping, making it the safest choice for maintenance workshops.
A
P-Series(HRC 67-69) works best on materials up to HRC 35 (typically normalized or annealed cast steel). If you need to cut pre-hardened materials (HRC 38-45), tool life will decrease, and coating selection becomes critical. For anything harder, we would need to review the specific application.
A
Safety is paramount. We grind our K-Series and P-Series tools to DIN Class A or AA tolerances. We also perform a profile simulation to ensure the root fillet shape is correct, reducing stress concentration—a critical factor for preventing tooth breakage under heavy lifting loads.
